Make it Monday: White Seamless Backdrop

If you have had me as a professor for any type of "studio photography" course, chances are good that I encouraged you to "avoid wrinkles and creases" in your backdrops.  This task is certainly easier said than done, especially when working with a cloth backdrop.  Elizabeth Halford of Elizabeth Halford Photography and Gracie May Photogaphy has created a video tutorial that shows you how to have a seamless backdrop while working in the studio.  There are a few things to keep in mind before watching Halford's tutorial:
  • Halford notes that she uses a large backdrop and suggests to use one that is roughly ten feet wide (3 meters).
  • She explains why vinyl is a great material to use for backdrops because they can be cleaned easily.
  • Halford is using four strobes to light her backdrop; the light helps to create a bright white backdrop.
  • She explains why it's important to use a strobe light with both a continuous bulb and a flash tube
  • Halford also notes that speedlights can be used for this style of shooting.
  • She explains the different uses of an "umbrella" and a "softbox" as lighting accessories.  Be sure to take note as to which one is the key and which ones are the fill lights.
  • Her ISO is set to 200 when shooting in the studio.
  • Take note of her thoughts behind adjusting a deep depth of field with her aperture.
  • Halford explains how she adjusts her shutter speed to get the effect she wants.
