Within many of your classes you'll be required to use an "off-camera flash". I use my off camera flash a lot when I am shooting weddings, a live band or when I'm on a freelance photojournalism or documentary assignment. There are many ways that you can use this piece of equipment: a) attach it to the hot shoe on your DSLR, b) attach it to a sync cord through your DSLR or c) depending on your flash, you can adjust the settings to be wireless and have the flash go off when the picture is taken. Your off-camera flash can also be set up to produce hard light or if you attach a diffuser it, the flash can give off a soft light.
In the video below, photographer Gavin Hoey from AdoramaTV explains how to shoot an outdoor portrait using an off-camera flash. Be sure to pay close attention to the techniques that he uses. Notice that Hoey's camera has a transmitter attached to the hot shoe and the off-camera flashes is actually attached to a tripod. The transmitter allows Hoey's flash to function on a wireless setting:
