Pho·tog Friday: Elizabeth Claffey

Welcome to Pho·tog Friday!
Claffey, Elizabeth, Self Portrait.
This particular "Pho·tog Friday" post is special because this photographer will be giving a live webinar lecture to at AiP Online on August 14th at 7:30pm EST.  Mark your calendars!  Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement within your classroom.

Photographer Elizabeth Claffey has recently returned from Albania, where she spent one year photographing and documenting the role of women in a post-communist and post-conflict society.  Claffey's trip to Albania was funded by one of the most prestigious grants a photographer can hope to be awarded: A Fulbright Scholarship.  So... what exactly does it mean to be a photographer who is photographing the "role of a woman" in present day Albania?  Let's take a peak at a few of the events that Claffey photographed on while she was there.
In October of 2012, the YWCA in Tirana organized a charity walk to raise awareness for women's health and breast cancer:

In November of 2012, Albania celebrated one hundred years of independence from the Ottoman Empire.  Needless to say, there was a huge celebration in which everyone wore red and black; the same colors as the Albanian flag:

In February of 2013, Claffey traveled to Elbasan to visit a non-profit organization called "In the Family, For the Family".  This organization helps women in the town of Elbasan:

Along side her work as a documentary photographer, Claffey also started a Youth Art Club, which focuses on young artists between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five.  To say that Claffey is a dedicated to her subjects as a photographer would be an understatement.  To learn more about Elizabeth Claffey and her work as a photographer, be sure to attend the live webinar lecture!  Details for the lecture will be posted soon by your professors.
