Make it Monday: Elizabeth Claffey Lecture

Welcome to Make it Monday!

The last "Pho·Tog Friday" post was written about our upcoming lecture for the Photography Department Lecture Series, which will feature photographer Elizabeth Claffey. We are pleased to announce photographer, Elizabeth Claffey.  Please join us on August 14th at 7:30pm EST (5:30 MST) for a free live photography lecture.  She will address her profession as a photojournalist and documentary photographer.

Claffey, Elizabeth, 100 Years of Albanian Independence, 2012.
Claffey is an American photographer currently based out of Tirana, Albania.  Claffey has an uncanny ability to connect the “practice of photography” with a “human interaction”.  She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in to document the Albanian women’s role in their country, a post-conflict and post-communist nation.

The idea of the photographing a common “theme” within a series can be difficult for a student, or even a professional photographer to grasp.  Another challenge that many photographers face is the ability to show empathy towards one’s subjects.  However, Claffey’s theory on dealing with these two challenges would be very beneficial for students to hear.

Claffey’s images not only display distinct motifs connecting those photographs within a series but she also takes the idea of connecting with a subject to a new level.  For example, while she has been working on her documentary centered on women’s roles in Albania, she has also photographed those imprisoned at Tirana’s Women’s Prison.  Respectfully, those images are only shared with her subject’s family although this fact gives her viewers a deeper understanding of her commitment to her work.

A few of the publications that have featured Claffey’s photographs are: PDN Magazine, USA Today, The Dallas Morning News, and Yankee Publishing.
