Make it Monday: Jim Zuckerman on Composition

Do you ever think that you need to improve upon your composition skills? Don't worry, you're not alone! I'm a firm believer that everyone - regardless of if s/he is a student or a professional photographer - needs to improve on their composition from time to time. The fun thing about composition is that as one grows as a photographer, so does his/her composition strategies.

Before we become "masters" at composition, we must first understand the basics.  I wanted to share an article with you from Photo Video EDU's Learning section titled, "Jim Zuckerman on Composition", written by Jim Zuckerman himself:

Zuckerman was a medical student, when he shifted gears to study photography in 1970! He has taught at several universities and small private schools and has exhibited his work in art galleries across the United States.  This article is actually the introduction to a series that cover different compositional strategies: The Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Framing, Graphic Design, Background, Classic Landscape Technique, Foregrounds, Moving into the Frame, Patterns, Lines, Balance, Distinctive Perspectives, Symmetry, Light's Influence, Negative Space, and finally, Breaking the Rules. "No one ever said finding a great composition is easy. It’s not." (Zuckerman, online). It's best to learn the basics so you can then, break the rules!
