Pho·tog Friday: Jodi Cilley · Update & Films

Jodi Cilley, AiP Online's latest guest speaker, hosted a lecture a month ago... today!  For those of you who attended the lecture, you may recall that Cilley is a filmmaker and professor based out of San Diego, California. Given the "month long anniversary" of Cilley's past lecture, I wanted to share some exciting news... along with some of Cilley's films that were covered in her lecture.

One of Cilley's most amazing achievements as a filmmaker, in my opinion, is that she's one of the founders and the current president of the "Film Consortium San Diego" (FCSD), which is a collective of filmmakers who have worked to turn San Diego into a thriving film industry for the past two years.   So... what's the big "update" you ask?  Well, the FCSD has recently announced the first annual San Diego Film Awards!  This event will be held on March 6th at the Horton Grand Hotel in downtown San Diego.

Over two hundred films were entered although there will only be twenty-seven award given out, including "Best Director", "Best Writing", "Best Actor/Actress", "Best Cinematography", "Best Editing"... to name a few.  According to San Diego Reader, "Former UT-TV host and longtime local newspaper personality Chris Cantore drew hosting duties. Emmy-nominated actress Kimberlin Brown (The Young and the Restless) will be there, so will Jose Yenque (Traffic), and Superman's big screen sidekick, Jimmy Olsen aka Marc McClure" (Marks).  To check out one of the films that Cilley has created within the FCSD, check out the video below:

Cilley is also one of the co-founders of "Real Good Films", which is a collective of artists who have been creating films together since 2011.  This group was filmed around the filming of a short movie titled The Point of Infection, a zombie flick.  To watch Real Good Films' first short, please click "here".  Throughout Real Good Films' movies, there always seems to be a mysterious undertone.  Check out the piece below titled Maid for Murder:

...and one of my personal favorite short films produced by Real Good films, Streetwalker:

Along with what Cilley noted about her involvement with the Film Consortium San Diego and Real Good Films, I found that Cilley's lecture really "hit home" in regards to the fact that as a still photographer, it is also essential to be able to use your DSLR to create the moving image.  As a student at AiP Online, you will have the opportunity to use your DSLR camera to create films within your Time Based Media I and II courses.  Keep in mind that a photographer who can use their camera to create both still and moving images will be more valuable to an employer who is looking to fill "two positions".  To check out more information about Jodi Cilley, be sure to click "here" to access her IMDB page.
