Pho·tog Friday: Maki Kawakita

As you may have read in your e-mail and in your classrooms, we have a guest speaker next Wednesday night: Maki KawakitaFrom high fashion to Kabuki-style imagery to self-portraits, Maki Kawakita creates edgy, contemporary images renowned for their bold performance and thought-provoking composition. As a well-known fashion photographer, Kawakita has photographed numerous celebrities such as Alicia Keyes, Paris Hilton, Beyoncé, and Missy Elliot. She has also shot several advertising campaigns for Coors Light, Levi Strauss & Co., Virgin Records, Warner Music and Smirnoff. 

Kawakita’s camera has taken her all around the world, and her global experience has inspired in her work; most notably her connection to the Japanese, American, and European cultures. Her work has been featured in many publications such as Time, Marie Claire and Vibe. Some of her recent shows included a 2009 exhibition at Afad Gallery in Turkey and an exhibition in 2008 at the NMM Galery in Milan, Italy. Also in 2008, she was awarded the Prix de la Photographie in Paris for portraiture and was selected as one of Japan’s top 100 photographers in 2007!
