Website Wednesday: Purdue Online Writing Lab

Photographers clearly express themselves the best visually however photographers also need to be able to express themselves verbally.  Regardless of if your goal is to work as a photojournalist for a local newspaper, start your own freelance business and/or become a photography teacher, you'll need to be able to write well.  Consider the following of what you'll have to write well for any one of these career choices:
  • Resume / CV
  • Artist Statement
  • Various Statements on Website
  • Various Blog Posts on Blog
  • E-mails to Clients
  • Contracts for Clients
  • Personalized Model & Property Release Forms
Of course... these are only a few examples of where your writing skills will either "make you" or "break you". Students at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh - Online Division are expected to use MLA formatting for writing style, spelling, grammar, citation of sources... and well, anything that will be formed with letters verses cameras.

Luckily, there's a fantastic website to check out that address any and every question you might have about your writing skills.  If you go to AIO's Writing Center, it will direct you to the Purdue Online Writing Lab website, which is often referred to simply as "Purdue OWL".

In my opinion, the most helpful section of this website is the page that teaches you how to cite an electronic source, such as a website.  Click "here" for details.  You will also find ways to cite other types of web publications.  An easy way to gain points on an assignment is to make sure that you're citing the sources that you used to help you with your assignment.  When in doubt, look for your answers on the Purdue Online Writing Lab website or ask your instructor!
