There were many photographers who influenced me as a student, but none more so than the infamous James Nachtwey. Many words could describe Nachtwey as a person, although let's start with his profession: photojournalist. Typically working under harsh conditions, Nachtwey focuses on covering war, conflict, disease, and fammon around the world. I would also use the term "pure" to describe Nachtwey's approach to his work. Stated in his own words, "I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated." (Nachtwey, web)

Nachtwey has been working in the field of photojournalism for thirty years now and most of his work is published by TIME. "To celebrate James Nachtwey’s 30 years as a contract
photographer for TIME, we have organized an exhibit of 54 layouts that
have appeared in the magazine featuring his work from Chechnya to
Somalia and from Afghanistan to Burma, along with a series of his
powerful, previously unpublished photographs. Below, James Nachtwey, and
TIME’s Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs, reflect on the relationship between
photographer and publication." (TIME, web). To check out the photographs TIME published to honor Nachtwey, click "here".
