You may notice the word "scrim" on your list of required equipment for a few different classes, particularly "PH136: Lighting". After you have purchased a scrim our built your own, the question that pops up next is usually, "what the heck do I do
with this thing"? There are multiple uses for a Scrim; you can use
this accessory both inside your studio and outside,
on location.
My personal favorite scenario to use this lighting accessory is outdoors in harsh light. We may all be aware that the "Golden Hours" is the best time to shoot portraits - or any subject for that matter. That being said, these hours are not always the most convenient time to shoot and/or to meet a client. In the video below, Israel Hyman from Izzy Video describes how he uses the Westcott Scrim Jim to diffuse harsh light while shooting outside during the "noon day sun":
