Pho·tog Friday: Conor Toumarkine

Welcome to Pho·tog Friday!

Toumarkine filming in Bermuda
As a photography student at AiP Online, you will eventually dabble into the world of video.  It is very important for still photographers to also be able to shoot moving images in order to broaden his or her skill set.  A photographer who is able to create both still images and video, will inevitably be able to attract a wider range of clientele.  With that being said, this week we are going to be looking at the up and coming photographer and videographer, Conor Toumarkine.

Toumarkine is originally from New Hampshire and studied at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he majored in Studio Arts and minored in Business.  Upon graduating in 2006, he has wasted no time and has started a variety of small businesses.  Toumarkine currently works as a freelance producer, videographer and editor for both of his businesses called “Shreddy Times” and “Light the Moment”.

What "fuels" the creativity behind these two different freelance businesses might you ask?  I shall tell you, Toumarkine has a passion for extreme sports, such as snowboarding, mountain biking, base jumping, skateboarding, skiing, etc.  These extreme interests have influenced the majority of his work as a videographer.  Toumarkine's "Shreddy Times" production business focuses on capturing extreme sports.  On the opposite end of the spectrum, his "Light the Moment" business focuses on wedding videography... well, perhaps wedding videography with a twist.  Like every good photographer, Toumarkine also produces videos for his personal portfolio.

When you watch the videos below, I'd like you to think about a few aspects of each piece:
Creativity - - Audio
Content - - Camera Stability
Composition - - Exposure
One of my personal favorite videos produced within Toumarkine's "Shreddy Times" company is titled Jumping off the Rocks, which was filmed in Bermuda:

On a more serious yet positive note, Shreddy Times also produced a short documentary titled Moving Forward.  This video is about Toumarkine’s brother, Danny, who was seriously injured in a snowboarding accident.  The short film is about Danny’s path to recovery:

One of my favorite wedding videos produced by Toumarkine's "Light the Magic" company is almost staged like a music video for the song Without You:
You might recognize "Danny" from the Moving Forward documentary in the video below titled, Finishing my Father's Pottery.  In this video, Toumarkine discusses the path that he and his brother took in order to have his late father's pottery completed.  A truely beautiful and touching piece:

To conclude today's post, ask yourself the question, "What inspires Toumarkine's work - and what inspires my work?"  "Where did Tourmarkine's creativity come from and where does my creativity come from?"  There's no right or wrong answer - and that answer certainly does not have to be limited to one idea.
